Entertainment, Arts and Sports

The ACT Government's ambition is for Canberra to be recognised as Australia's emerging cultural, arts and entertainment hub.

Investment in entertainment, arts and sports infrastructure in the ACT will:

  • support a vibrant, growing arts and cultural sector
  • generate economic impacts through increased tourism
  • ensure Canberra continues to be one of the most attractive and liveable cities in the world.

The Entertainment, Arts and Sports Infrastructure plan outlines how improved infrastructure will allow our city to host more top-tier theatre, musicals and concerts. It will help Canberra to become a destination where hundreds of thousands of people can see quality cultural events on a regular basis. Where top-quality sports experiences take place for spectators and players at the elite, club and social levels.

Key projects

Key projects in this sector include:

A new or enhanced Canberra stadium

The ACT Government will actively engage with the Australian Sports Commission to explore mutually beneficial opportunities within the AIS precinct. This includes investigating options for a significantly enhanced or new 30,000 seat stadium as a key feature.

Canberra Theatre Centre redevelopment

The Canberra Theatre Centre redevelopment will create a world-class destination for artists and audiences in the heart of Canberra. The design will include a new 2,000 seat theatre as well as expansion and adaptation of existing venues.

EPIC Precinct staged redevelopment

This work will ensure EPIC can continue to host large exhibitions, concerts, conferences and a range of multicultural and community events along with a revitalised festival precinct. The proposed redevelopment of EPIC will begin with the refurbishment of Fitzroy Pavilion.

Entertainment pavilion and convention centre

A new indoor entertainment pavilion and convention centre will be co-located in the city centre. The first stage would focus on delivering the entertainment pavilion with capacity to hold at least 7,500 people and host a diverse range of touring artists, exhibitions, sporting events and performances.

Kingston Arts Precinct

The Kingston Arts Precinct will be a leading destination for visitors and locals to explore contemporary visual arts and culture in the ACT. The precinct will include a large outdoor space, 2,000 sq m of retail space, accommodation for visiting artists, a gallery, workshops, meeting rooms and a theatrette.
