Health

The ACT Government is investing in community health and hospital infrastructure. These facilities will make sure all Canberrans can access care when and where they need it.

Mother and son talking to health professional

Planning for a health care system that can grow with our community brings together skilled professionals with state-of-the-art technology and quality infrastructure.

Increasing community health services will ease pressure on hospitals. While expanding existing hospitals will ensure that there is modern, high-quality care when you need it the most.

Modern hospital infrastructure will help doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers to perform their jobs better. It’ll also improve patient treatment and recovery and offer space to support families.

The Health Infrastructure Plan outlines our vision for new and upgraded infrastructure that prioritises:

  • health support in the community
  • better patient care
  • improved coordination between public health services.

Hospital infrastructure

Public hospitals are our most significant health infrastructure assets. In addition to ensuring that Canberra Hospital continues to support the needs of our community, the ACT Government has committed to building a new hospital in Canberra’s north.

Key hospital projects include:

The Canberra Hospital Expansion

This major project is delivering a new Critical Services Building, which will open in 2024. The new building will provide a brand new Emergency Department, more operating rooms, more treatment spaces and more Intensive Care Beds.

Other projects currently underway to modernise and improve facilities at Canberra Hospital include:

In addition, the Canberra Hospital Master Plan 2021–2041 will continue to guide the redevelopment of the Canberra Hospital campus over the next 20 years.
