Margaret Hendry School in North Gungahlin has been expanded to accommodate up to 600 additional Kindergarten to year 6 students.

Gungahlin is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia. This means there is an increasing number of children needing to enrol in local schools.

The ACT Government started planning the expansion of Margaret Hendry School in 2021.

The new spaces will support specialist learning and small group programs. This includes food technology and science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) programs.

New outdoor learning and play areas will enhance a connection to the environment. A new Community Hub will provide a flexible space to run school and community activities.

Two new carparks will help with traffic flow for school drop-off, pick-up and visits.

Progress

Building of new learning areas and facilities is complete.

The new Community Hub is complete. The Hub provides a new multipurpose space for the school and community. A large space has been provided in front of the Hub where a community garden will be developed.

The carparks are now complete on the east and west boundaries of the school.

The school’s solar photovoltaic system has been expanded to 250kW and the new solar panels are in place.

Project Benefits

The community will benefit from:

  • quality, contemporary education close to home
  • modern, accessible facilities for everyone
  • a focus on student and staff wellbeing
  • shared community spaces.
