Local businesses, residents and visitors to Braddon will soon enjoy improvements to the streets and landscaping.

Braddon has evolved from an industrial area into Canberra's most eclectic dining and shopping precinct.

To support the changing needs of the neighbourhood we are making it safer and more accessible.

Lonsdale Street will receive improvements, along with the Mort and Elouera Street intersection.

Elouera and Mort streets intersection

Safety and access improvements will be made at the Elouera and Mort Streets intersection.

The upgrades to the intersection aim to make it easier to walk from the light rail station through Braddon, and calm vehicle traffic travelling along Elouera and Mort Streets.

The listening report on the proposed intersection upgrade is now available to view on the YourSay conversations website.

Lonsdale Street

Lonsdale Street will become greener, more pedestrian friendly, and better suited to outdoor dining.

The upgrade will also improve connections with the City Centre, Haig Park and light rail.

Works will include:

  • Two crossings at the Girrawheen Street intersection, including one to Haig Park.
  • Two new crossings on Lonsdale Street. One north of the rainbow roundabout and the other south of it.
  • Median works at the City end of Lonsdale Street, near the Cooyong Street intersection.

New landscape elements will include:

  • new paving
  • improved lighting
  • more street furniture
  • new bike racks and bins
  • new trees, protection of existing ones and the addition of low garden beds.

Project benefits

The upgrade will:

  • Make Braddon more accessible, attractive and safer to enjoy
  • Improve pedestrian safety by calming traffic and adding more pedestrian crossings
  • Provide better access for wheelchairs and prams
  • Make it easier to travel to and from the Elouera Street light rail stop
  • Provide greater amenities with the installation of new street furniture, shade trees and garden beds
