  • Expected Project Completion

Upgraded roads and infrastructure will improve access in and around the Molonglo Valley.

A key part of this plan is the completion of John Gorton Drive and the new Molonglo River Bridge. This will encourage more people to call the Molonglo Valley home, by supporting:

  • large land releases in Molonglo
  • full development of Denman Prospect and Whitlam.

When built, the new bridge will span approximately 200 metres across the region’s major river, the Molonglo River. It will also be built above the one-in-100-year flood level of the Molonglo River.

The completion of this major road and bridge project will support:

  • improved traffic safety
  • public transport
  • active travel with off-road shared paths
  • future light rail connection
  • a new intersection with traffic lights to access the future Molonglo Group Centre
  • a water quality control pond
  • a pedestrian underpass of John Gorton Drive.

The bridge will also support native animal habitat for:

  • platypus nesting sites
  • pink tailed worm lizards
  • water birds
  • bats.

Funding for this project is provided by the ACT and Australian Governments. It is part of the Commonwealth's Investment Road and Rail Program.

Progress report

Work to prepare the project site started in October 2023 ahead of early works starting January 2024.

Detailed design for the main construction works is continuing with these works anticipated to commence in the second quarter of 2024. The bridge and approaching roads are expected to open to traffic by the end of 2025.
