Three footbridges in Umbagong District Park have been replaced.

The suburbs of Latham, Holt, Higgins, Macgregor, Charnwood, and Flynn border Umbagong Park. It provides over 50 hectares of open space for recreation.

Safety checks on the timber footbridges in 2021 found them to be potentially unsafe. The timber had deteriorated, having been in use since 1986. Construction to replace the bridges began in early 2023.

The new bridges are:

  • mainly made from steel with a rusted finish to complement the natural setting and colours of the Umbagong native grasslands
  • in the same positions as the existing timber bridges. This will limit impacts on surrounding areas of environmental and heritage significance
  • slightly wider than the timber bridges at two metres wide. This will improve access for cyclists, pedestrians, wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

Following feedback from the community, a lookout with seating has also been built on the bridge closest to Latham. This lookout is accessible for people on wheelchairs and mobility scooters. It provides an opportunity for the community to sit and enjoy the natural surrounds.
